In juli 1794 was het Hôtel de ville of het stadhuis van Parijs een plaats van geweld. Na een bewind van terreur onder leiding van Robespierre probeerden tegenstanders de macht te grijpen. Bang om gevangen genomen te worden probeerde de beroemde Franse Revolutionair Maximilien Robespierre zichzelf te doden met een pistool. Hij slaagde er echter alleen maar in om zijn kaak te breken. Anderen, zoals zijn broer Augusting, sprongen uit het raam van het stadhuis. Robespierre met verbrijzelde kaak werd gevangen genolmen. Hij werd opgesloten in dezelfde kamer waar Marie-Antoinette, de vrouw van koning Lodewijk XVI, verbleef net voor haar executie. Op 28 juli 1794 werd Robespierre onthoofd met de guillotine zonder vorm van proces op de Place de la Revolution.
