Met een oppervlakte van 105 hectare (inclusief een meer van 17 hectare) werd het park in 1856 aangelegd door de gebroeders Denis en Eugène Buhler, Parijse landschapsarchitecten, en in 1857 geopend. Het is het grootste park in Frankrijk in het hart van een stad.
