Wist je dat wetenschapper William Thomson, beter bekend als Lord Kelvin, in augustus 1847 van Chamonix naar Saint-Gervais wandelde over de Col du Bonhomme? Het verhaal gaat dat hij daar een andere beroemde wetenschapper ontmoette: James Prescott Joule, die hier op huwelijksreis was. Joule combineerde zaken met plezier en voerde in dit gebied enkele wetenschappelijke experimenten uit. Hij wilde het temperatuurverschil meten van water vóór en na een waterval. Hij verwachtte dat het water bovenaan iets kouder zou zijn dan onderaan. Joule mat de temperatuur van de Cascades de Sallanches.
