Sapevate che lo scienziato William Thomson, meglio conosciuto come Lord Kelvin, camminò da Chamonix a Saint-Gervais nell'agosto del 1847 attraversando il Col du Bonhomme. La storia racconta che incontrò un altro famoso scienziato: James Prescott Joule, che si trovava qui in luna di miele. Il signor Joule stava combinando affari con piacere e stava conducendo alcuni esperimenti scientifici in quest'area. Il signor Joule voleva misurare la differenza di temperatura dell'acqua prima e dopo una cascata. Le sue aspettative erano che l'acqua in cima fosse leggermente più fredda rispetto a quella in basso. Joule misurò la temperatura delle Cascades de Sallanches.
