Het museum, dat in 1890 werd geïnstalleerd in de lokalen van het Instituut voor Aardwetenschappen, in het hart van de campus van de voormalige keizerlijke universiteit die onder Willem II werd gebouwd, is een van de belangrijkste in de provincie door de rijkdom van zijn collecties (ongeveer 30.000 mineralen). Haar rol was voornamelijk verbonden met wetenschappelijk onderzoek en de opleiding van mineralogen.
De oorsprong van de collectie is het natuurhistorisch kabinet van een Straatsburgse professor in de geneeskunde. Na zijn dood in 1800 veranderde de stad het in een museum alvorens het in 1880 op te heffen ten gunste van de wetenschappelijke collecties van de nieuwe universiteit.
