Op 30 mei 1919, hier in het Hotel Majestic in Parijs, het idee voor het Koninklijk Instituut voor Internationale Zaken ; later begon het Chatham House vorm te krijgen. Een groep wetenschappers, die als leden van de Amerikaanse en Britse delegatie de Vredesconferentie van Parijs bijwoonde, werd door Lionel Curtis bijeengebracht om de noodzaak van een instituut te bespreken om kritische discussies te organiseren en de studie van internationale vraagstukken te bevorderen. Het Chatham House werd een onafhankelijk beleidsinstituut met het hoofdkantoor in Londen. Haar missie is om gezaghebbend commentaar te leveren op wereldgebeurtenissen en oplossingen te bieden voor wereldwijde uitdagingen.
