Hertog Karel III liet het in de 17e eeuw bouwen om de verdediging van de stad te verdubbelen en te versterken. Het was toen omringd door vier bastions en door grachten gescheiden van de Porte de la Craffe. Tegenwoordig markeert de poort de grens tussen de oude stad en de buitenwijk Les Trois Maisons. De wal aan de zijkant wordt bekroond door een middeleeuws geïnspireerde tuin.
