Herzog Karl III. ließ sie im 17. Jahrhundert errichten, um die Verteidigung der Stadt zu verdoppeln und zu verstärken. Damals war es von vier Bastionen umgeben und durch einen Graben von der Porte de la Craffe getrennt. Das Tor begrenzt heute das Viertel der Altstadt und den Vorort Trois Maisons. Die Stadtmauer an der Seite wird von einem mittelalterlich inspirierten Garten überragt.
