Il duca Carlo III lo fece costruire nel XVII secolo per raddoppiare e rafforzare la difesa della città. Era circondata da quattro bastioni e separata dalla Porte de la Craffe da un fossato. Oggi la porta segna il confine tra la Città Vecchia e il sobborgo di Les Trois Maisons. Il bastione laterale è sormontato da un giardino di ispirazione medievale.
