El duque Carlos III lo hizo construir en el siglo XVII para duplicar y reforzar la defensa de la ciudad. Entonces estaba rodeada por cuatro baluartes y separada de la Porte de la Craffe por fosos. En la actualidad, la puerta marca el límite entre el casco antiguo y el barrio de Les Trois Maisons. La muralla lateral está coronada por un jardín de inspiración medieval.
