Le duc Charles III la fit édifier au XVIIe siècle pour doubler et renforcer la défense de la ville. Elle était alors entourée de quatre bastions et séparée de la porte de la Craffe par des fossés. La porte délimite aujourd'hui le quartier de la Vieille Ville et le faubourg des Trois Maisons. Le rempart sur le côté est surmonté d'un jardin d'inspiration médiévale.
