Het kasteel ligt in de historische stad Nérac en werd in de 15e eeuw gebouwd door Alain d'Albret le Grand, de betovergrootvader van Henri IV. Het was de hoofdresidentie van de toekomstige Henri IV en zijn vrouw koningin Marguerite de Valois, bekend als koningin Margot, van 1577 tot 1582 en getuigt van de bloeitijd van de familie d'Albret en het hof van Nérac tijdens de Renaissance. Het grootste deel van het kasteel werd tijdens de Franse Revolutie ontmanteld en het enige dat vandaag de dag nog over is, is de opmerkelijke noordelijke vleugel van de binnenplaats.
Het Château de Nérac is op verschillende originele manieren opengesteld voor het publiek. Culturele evenementen gedurende het hele zomerseizoen.
