Het washuis "la fontaine" bevond zich op de oorspronkelijke bedding van de Gât Mort. Gebouwd in 1882 op het terrein van de heer Fournie, was het destijds een privé-wasplaats. Het stadsbestuur beschouwde dit gebouw echter als een openbaar gebouw en verklaarde, na een gunstig advies van de prefect, het washuis als gemeentelijk. Dit werd gedaan om de nodige reparaties en onderhoud uit te voeren.
