Het theater van Verdun, ontworpen door de architect Chenevier en voltooid in 1893, is geïnspireerd op de Opéra Garnier in Parijs. Het theater in Italiaanse stijl werd gebouwd aan de oevers van de Maas, op de plaats van een door brand verwoeste graanmarkt. Net als de openbare tuinen en andere promenades maakt het deel uit van de typische 19e-eeuwse stadsverfraaiing en vrijetijdsbesteding.
Promenades, muziektenten en theaters behoorden tot de plaatsen die nodig waren voor de animatie van een garnizoensstad.

De gebeeldhouwde decoratie op de gevel doet denken aan komische maskers.
