1813-1814. Het Baskische volk verwoest door Napoleontische troepen. Op 21 juni 1813 werden ze door Wellington in Gazteiz-Vitoria verslagen. Napoleontische troepen uit Portugal en Spanje staken de passen tussen Les Aldudes en Hendaye over. 2 legers botsten op elkaar, 112.000 soldaten van de coalitie (Britten, Spanjaarden, Wellingtons Portugezen) en 68.000 Napoleontische soldaten onder maarschalk Soult in dit kleine gebied (11.000 doden). De dorpen werden geplunderd en het bos verbrand. Het kostte de dorpen 30 jaar om te herstellen van deze oorlog. Baskenland kon heel goed omgaan met de aanwezigheid van de gedisciplineerde troepen die Wellington tot de wapenstilstand achterliet. Dit monument getuigt van het lijden van het Baskische volk.
