Whoolsthorpe is beroemd om de appel van Newton. Of althans dat is wat de legende ons vertelt. Die legende zegt dat Newton een appel zag vallen van de boom die hem inspireerde om zijn theorie betreffende de zwaartekracht. Hij verbleef in Whoolsthorpe op de leeftijd van 25 omdat er toen een pestuitbraak was in Cambridge. Een afstammeling van de boom kan je nu zien in de Botanische Tuinen in Cambridge.
