Hier op de hoek van St.Michael's Hill kon je vroeger het visueel effect zien dat gekend staat als de "Cafe Wall Illusion" of de "Cafémuur-illusie". Horizontale lijnen lijken helemaal niet parallel te lopen maar doen dat in werkelijkheid wel. Het werd voor het eerst werd beschreven door Richard Gregory in 1973. Gregory geeft aan dat hij zijn verhaal heeft ontleend aan Steve Simpson, een collega van zijn laboratorium, die het effect had opgemerkt op de muren van dit café in Bristol. Jammer genoeg hebben de volgende uitbaters van het pand dit historisch wetenschappelijk element niet behouden.
