De plek waar het Erechteion staat is een mythische plaats waar twee zwaargewichten uit de Griekse godenwereld het tegen elkaar opnamen : Poseidon versus Athena. Poseidon sloeg op deze plek zijn drietand in de rotsen waar nu het Erechteion staat. Op die plaats van inslag spoelde zeewater uit het niets en zou zo de stad een link met de zee voorzien. Maar Athena plante op diezelfde plek een olijfboom als geschenk aan de stad. De koning van Athene die partij moest kiezen oordeelde dat de olijfboom nuttiger voor de stad was dan de zee. En daarom is het dat de stad niet aan de zee ligt maar op de olijfgaardrijke heuvels iets meer in het binnenland. En zo werd eveneens Athena de godin van de stad. Er staat nu nog steeds een olijfboom op deze plaats, maar die werd wel in 1917 geplant.
