De belegering van Smerwick vond plaats bij Ard na Caithne in november 1580, tijdens de Tweede Desmond Rebellie in Ierland. Een troep van tussen de 400 en 700 pauselijke huursoldaten, voornamelijk van Spaanse en Italiaanse oorsprong, landde in Smerwick om de katholieke rebellen te steunen. Ze werden gedwongen zich terug te trekken naar het nabijgelegen fort Dún an Óir, waar ze belegerd werden door de Engelsen. De pauselijke commandant onderhandelde en werd omgekocht, en de verdedigers gaven zich binnen enkele dagen over. De officieren werden gespaard, maar de andere rangen werden vervolgens op bevel van de Engelse commandant, Arthur Grey, de Lord Deputy van Ierland, summier geëxecuteerd.
