Limerick, in het westen van Ierland, was het toneel van twee belegeringen tijdens de Ierse Confederate Oorlogen. De tweede en grootste hiervan vond plaats tijdens de Cromwelliaanse verovering van Ierland in 1650–51. Limerick was een van de laatste versterkte steden die werd gehouden door een alliantie van Ierse Confederates en Royalisten tegen de troepen van het Engelse Parlement. De garnizoenscommandant, Hugh Dubh O'Neill, gaf zich over aan Henry Ireton na een langdurige en bittere belegering. Meer dan 2.000 soldaten van Cromwells New Model Army werden in Limerick gedood, en Henry Ireton, Cromwells schoonzoon, stierf aan de pest.
