Het werk werd in 1698 gebeeldhouwd door de beeldhouwer Gioacchino Vitagliano naar een ontwerp van Paolo Amato.
De naam betekent 'overvloedig met water' en is afgeleid van het Arabische 'gharraf'.
Het marmeren bouwwerk bestaat uit een bassin met daarin een piramidevormige verhoging die uitmondt in de figuur van de godin van de overvloed met daarboven een adelaar die vecht met een hydra.
Aanvankelijk stond de monumentale fontein voor de Genio del Garraffo aan de Vucciria, op het plein met dezelfde naam. In 1862 werd het verplaatst naar Piazza Marina, waar het vandaag de dag nog steeds te zien is.
