Mecher is een dorp en administratief centrum van de gemeente Clervaux in het district Diekirch in het kanton Clervaux. Het ligt op ongeveer 48 km van de stad Luxemburg. Aan het einde van de 6e eeuw en vooral in de 7e eeuw hebben zendelingen, leerlingen van de heilige Willibrord, de regio gechristen. Zij introduceerden de teelt van wijnstokken in dit dal van de Ardennen om wijn te verkrijgen voor de goddelijke dienst. Eenmaal per jaar, in de maand oktober, werd er een groot feest in het dorp gehouden waar alle inwoners deze wijn mochten proeven, die daarna werd geleverd aan de nabijgelegen kloosters en parochies.
