Het Park is na de Oude Plantage het oudste park van Rotterdam, gelegen ten westen van het Centrum. Het Park is gelegen tussen de Nieuwe Maas, de Parkhaven, de Westzeedijk en het Scheepvaartkwartier.
Het gebied waarop nu het Park ligt, is in het geheim in 1851 aangekocht door de gemeente Rotterdam met de bedoeling hier een slachthuis te vestigen. Na bezwaren van Delfshaven hiertegen en op verzoek van de raad, besloot de gemeente Rotterdam in 1852 hier een "publieke wandeling" te maken.
