Het ligt ten zuiden van de stad Leeuwarden, ten noordwesten van Grouw en ten noordoosten van Rauwerd. Door het dorpsgebied stroomt de Zwin en langs de dorpsgrenzen De Jokse en de Moezel.Tezamen met Friens, Aegum en Idaard vormen het een gezamenlijke gemeenschap. Het dorp had een eigen haven, maar deze is uiteindelijk gedempt. In 2021 telde het dorp 1.085 inwoners. Onder het dorp vallen ook de buurtschappen De Drie Romers en Tsienzerburen.
