Het ligt ten westen van Heerenveen, aan de weg tussen Joure en Sint Nicolaasga. In 2021 telde het dorp 805 inwoners. Onder het dorp valt ook een klein stukje van de buurtschap Heide.Het dorp is in de 19e eeuw ontstaan rond een brug over de Scharsterrijn : een vaart die van het Tjeukemeer tot de Langweerderwielen loopt. Ter hoogte van de scharren werd het dorp gebouwd. Lange tijd werd Scharsterbrug dan ook De Scharren genoemd.
