Het ligt ten noordoosten van Wons, ten noordwesten van Witmarsum, ten zuidwesten van Arum, ten zuidoosten van Kimswerd en Harlingen en ten noordoosten van Zurich. De dorpskern ligt aan de noordkant van de Pingjumervaart, in de streek de Bouwhoek, dicht bij de Waddenzee.Pingjum staat in de omgeving bekend als een open en tolerant dorp en wordt ook wel een 'kunstenaarsdorp' genoemd. In 2021 telde het dorp 585 inwoners. Onder het dorp vallen ook de buurtschappen Bootland, De Blokken, De Nes en Strand. Evenals de voormalige buurtschappen Kleinhuizen, Lutke Penjum en Pingjumerrijge.
