In een scherpe binnenbocht van de Schelde, vier kilometer ten noorden van de Antwerpse binnenstad, ligt Fort Sint-Filips. Alexander Farnese, de hertog van Parma, bouwde het in 1584 samen met Fort Sint-Marie tijdens de belegering van Antwerpen.
Met die twee 'tegenforten' wilde hij de stad afsnijden van de Staatse forten Lillo en Liefkenshoek. Tussen beide forten bouwde hij ook zijn indrukwekkende schipbrug. Na de val van Antwerpen bleef Fort Sint-Filips van groot militair belang, om tegenwicht te bieden aan Lillo en Liefkenshoek.
