Het Amsterdam – Rhein kanaal is, zoals de naam al aangeeft, een kanaal dat Amsterdam verbindt met de Rijn. Het verbindt de havens van Amsterdam met het Ruhr-industriegebied en is het drukste kanaal ter wereld. Het is 72 kilometer lang, 100 tot 120 meter breed en heeft een diepte van 6 meter. Vlak voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd besloten dat het kanaal moest worden aangelegd, maar de bouw werd pas in 1952 voltooid.
