Onder Schoonebeek, op een diepte van zo’n 800 meter, ligt het grootste aardolieveld op het vasteland van West-Europa. In 1943 werd het veld ontdekt en na de oorlog richtten Shell en Esso de Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM) op om het veld in productie te nemen.
Tussen 1947 en 1996 produceerde de NAM ongeveer 250 miljoen vaten olie uit dit veld. Omdat de olie stroperig en taai is, was de olie steeds moeilijker naar boven te halen. Verdere winning was te kostbaar en in 1996 werd gestopt met de oliewinning. In Schoonebeek en in de omgeving zijn nog enkele 'jaknikkers' blijven staan als herinnering aan het verleden.
In 2011 werd het veld weer in productie genomen. Dankzij nieuwe technieken (horizontale putten in combinatie met stoominjectie) kan de olie makkelijker naar het oppervlak worden gehaald.
