Unterhalb von Schoonebeek, in einer Tiefe von etwa 800 Metern, liegt das größte Ölfeld auf dem westeuropäischen Festland. Das Feld wurde 1943 entdeckt und nach dem Krieg gründeten Shell und Esso die Dutch Petroleum Company (NAM), um das Feld in Produktion zu nehmen.
Zwischen 1947 und 1996 förderte die NAM rund 250 Millionen Barrel Öl aus diesem Feld. Da das Öl zähflüssig und zäh ist, war es immer schwieriger, das Öl zu gewinnen. Die weitere Förderung war zu teuer und die Ölförderung wurde 1996 eingestellt. In Schoonebeek und Umgebung sind ein paar Ja-Sager geblieben, die an die Vergangenheit erinnern.
Im Jahr 2011 wurde das Feld wieder in Betrieb genommen. Dank neuer Techniken (horizontale Bohrungen in Kombination mit Dampfinjektion) kann das Öl leichter an die Oberfläche gebracht werden.
