En dessous de Schoonebeek, à une profondeur d'environ 800 mètres, se trouve le plus grand champ pétrolier du continent européen. Le champ a été découvert en 1943 et après la guerre, Shell et Esso ont créé la Dutch Petroleum Company (NAM) pour mettre le champ en production.
Entre 1947 et 1996, la NAM a extrait environ 250 millions de barils de pétrole de ce champ. Comme le pétrole est visqueux et épais, il est devenu de plus en plus difficile de l'extraire. L'extraction ultérieure était trop coûteuse et la production de pétrole a été interrompue en 1996. À Schoonebeek et dans ses environs, quelques partisans sont restés pour rappeler le passé.
En 2011, le champ a été remis en service. Grâce aux nouvelles techniques (forages horizontaux combinés à l'injection de vapeur), le pétrole peut être extrait plus facilement.
