Het is een wonder dat tijdens het opblazen van het kasteel van Valkenburg de Berkelpoort en de Grendelpoort gespaard zijn gebleven. De Berkelpoort is rond 1335 gebouwd en was onderdeel van de middeleeuwse stadsverdediging.
De poort had toen ook een ophaalbrug over de
stadsgracht. De Berkelpoort werd vooral gebruikt door reizigers in de richting van Oud-Valkenburg, Schin op Geul en Aken. In 2007-2008 is de poort grondig gerenoveerd.
De twee grote mergeltorens waar de poort uit bestaat, worden nu verbonden door een houten loopbrug.
