Met de bouw van de huidige Bonifatiuskerk is men begonnen in 1404. De kerk en de toren werden in de loop van de 15e eeuw voltooid.
In de 16e eeuw is de kerk tweemaal afgebrand waarbij de toren beide keren gespaard bleef. De kerk die bij de herbouw in 1555 tot stand kwam, is in aanleg de kerk zoals die er nu nog staat. Het is een laat-gotische hallenkerk met twee brede beuken en een smalle zuidbeuk die onder één dak ligt met de middelste beuk.
De scheefstand van de toren wordt mogelijk veroorzaakt door de drooglegging van de Wieringermeer waardoor de grondwaterstand is veranderd. In ieder geval staat vast dat de toren de laatste 30 jaar gemiddeld 3 mm per jaar in noordoostelijke richting scheefzakt.
