The Cossack Pit nature reserve derives its name from a Cossack battalion of the Russian army that camped here after the French troops were driven out. The Russians had misbehaved in the city of Utrecht to such an extent that they had to leave the city. They were able to make use of the 30 wells dug by the French-Batavian troops in 1804.
Now there are also heaths and small fields in the forest area. It is also the habitat of the long-eared owl.
