La Charca is a protected nature reserve that adjoins the also protected dunes of Maspalomas.
In fact, this lagoon is located almost at the mouth of a dry river. Between the lagoon and the sea, there is a narrow dune area. When the river, during heavy rain, contains water, it flows into the lagoon. In strong storms, seawater washes over the dune area, making the water brackish.
Here, waterfowl can always be seen; a pair of binoculars is needed.
