The castle was built in the 17th century and has a star-shaped plan of Italian influence.
Inside there are pavilions , barracks and reservoirs , originally for gunpowder ; later it was used as a military prison .
Today, this fortress has been converted into a large multifunctional cultural and recreational space , including permanent halls on the local history, temporary exhibition halls and shops and arts and crafts workshops. Concerts and summer activities are also held on the castle's parade ground.
