The estate consists of a total of 380 ha of forest and nature areas. The majority of the forests are relatively young and originate from heathland colonizations. The forest floor varies from very nutrient-poor and dry (mainly in the locations of the former heathland colonizations) to richer holt podzolic soils. The main tree species is Scots pine.
The current management method, integrated forest management, is - in addition to the production of valuable wood - aimed at increasing the nature values of the forests. This is done, among other things, by leaving dead trees standing and developing a varied forest structure through group-based thinning. This approach offers special opportunities for the development of flora and fauna.
The forests of Tongeren are FSC certified.
