Click here for the daily program! This is section 3, Vaals-Susteren, of the Vélopalise Bastogne-Wageningen, a six-day cycling tour as part of Peace, Freedom, and Security. The Vélopalise starts in Normandy at Sainte Mère Église and follows the Voie de la Liberté to Bastogne in the Belgian Ardennes.
On this day, we pass the Margraten War Cemetery and the village of Mesch, where the Americans were the first to enter the Netherlands.
For Susteren/Echt, the Americans were held up in September '44, and they only advanced to Susteren in January '45. The association "On Wings of Freedom" informs us, and we look for old hideouts at the Lilienbosch Monastery.
