Chambéry (Savoyard: Chambèri) is a city and municipality in the French Alps. It is the capital of the department of Savoie. In 1999, it had a population of 55,786 people. Chambéry is one of the places where the Université de Savoie is located.
The city existed already in Roman times. Between 1232 and 1562, Chambéry was the capital of the land of Savoy. Between 1792 and 1815, when Savoy belonged to France, Chambéry was the capital of the Mont-Blanc department. In 1860, Savoy definitively became part of France, after being part of Sardinia in the intervening years.
During World War II, the city was partly destroyed.
