Did you know that the Basilica of Notre-Dame-du-Port is foundational to the First Crusade? The horrific effects of that crusade are brilliantly depicted in the book by Stefan Hertmans, The Convert. 'He (Pope Urban II) went to Clermont to pray in the crypt of the Basilica of Notre-Dame-du-Port, and the next day launched the holy war in his famous call for the First Crusade, somewhere in the fields near the city, on November 27, 1095.' He is said to have concluded his speech with the poignant words: "Deus lo Volt! (God wills it!)". This phrase thus became the battle cry of the crusaders.
