Located in one of the city's oldest districts, behind the cathedral, rue des S?urs Macarons (formerly rue de la Hache) was home to one of Nancy's oldest shops until 1983. The building was constructed in 1725 by architect Jean-Nicolas Jennesson.
Several remarkable architectural features have been listed as historic monuments since 1987, at the initiative of the owners.
The Fours des S?urs Macarons are located on the first floor, and are said to be the birthplace of Nancy macaroons. These are traditional wood-fired ovens dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, and are listed as historic monuments.
A stained glass window created in 1889 by Ferdinand Gounon, depicting a bust of a nun and once adorning the store's entrance door, is also preserved in this place brimming with history. At the request of the owners, it has also been protected as a historic monument since 2021.
In 1959, when there was a change of ownership, the pastry business known as "Maison des S?urs Macarons", involving the special manufacture and wholesale, semi-wholesale and retail sale of macaroons and nonnettes known as "SOEURS MACARONS", was still located at 10 rue des S?urs Macarons, and belonged to Georges Aptel.
From 1935 to 1983, the Aptel family rented the house and, on the first floor, the production workshop, macaroon oven, nonnette oven and sales store.
Since 2020, this important and secretive heritage of Nancy has been home to a museum: the doors of this centuries-old and unusual place are open during the European Heritage Days and by appointment.
