The church was built to a design by the Milanese architect Cecilio Arpesani for Cardinal Maffi of Pisa. It was inaugurated in July 1916.
In 1919 the images of the lunettes were modeled by Ludovico Pogliaghi, as Ugo Nebbia mentions in his book dedicated to Ludovico Pogliaghi. In the same years, Pogliaghi was commissioned to make the candelabra angels for the Pisa Cathedral.
The church is the seat of the parish; From 1981 to 1989, Giovanni Santucci, the current Bishop of Massa Carrara-Pontremoli, was pastor of the parish.
The building in Romanesque Revival style, with clear references to the Pisan Romanesque style, has a striking facade on two levels: the lower level is decorated with blind arcades, while the upper part is lit by a series of small arches framing the central rose window.
