Laurium was a border fortress along the limes, the northern border of the Roman Empire on the river Rhine, now the Old Rhine. Laurium is identified with the partially excavated castellum in Woerden. Remnants of the fort, the civilian settlement, Roman ships and wooden quays have been found there.
