En el Castillo de Doorwerth se alojaba el Museo del Ejército Holandés antes de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, pero esa colección se trasladó a Leiden en 1944. Durante la Batalla de Arnhem, el castillo fue ocupado por los alemanes y fue en gran parte destruido durante el invierno del 44/45 debido a los bombardeos de los Aliados, pero finalmente por la voladura a manos de los alemanes.
Los aliados fueron abastecidos con lanzamientos de paracaídas, pero a veces estos caían en manos alemanas. (ver foto)
En 1949, tras el inicio de la restauración, se estableció el Museo Airborne, que en 1978 se trasladó a su ubicación actual, el antiguo Hotel Hartenstein.
