C'est ici, au Kärntnertortheater, que Beethoven a présenté pour la première fois sa Neuvième Symphonie au public, le vendredi 7 mai 1842. Ce fut un succès inattendu mais immense. Beethoven insista pour se trouver également sur scène, aux côtés du chef d'orchestre, afin de donner le tempo. Et ce n'était pas si évident, car qui l'orchestre devait-il alors regarder pour suivre le tempo ? De plus, ils n'avaient eu que 4 jours pour répéter l'œuvre.
