L’établissement minier Hervester a été aménagé en 1912 entre l’actuelle Halterner Straße et la Lippe : à l’est, la zone catholique avec la Josefschule et la Josefkirche a été construite, à l’ouest le quartier protestant avec l’Augustaschule et l’actuelle Kreuzkirche.
Aujourd’hui, les mines sont fermées, le travail n’est plus sur le pas de la porte. « La nouvelle utilisation de la zone de mine et la création d’emplois durables constituent un défi majeur », reconnaît M. Lütkenhorst, affirmant que le changement structurel n’a pas encore pris les effets souhaités. Néanmoins, le quartier d’Hervest n’est pas à dénigrer : à travers la rénovation et la modernisation, le quartier a développé un charme qui lui est propre.
