Vanaf het begin van de Tachtigjarige Oorlog werd Middelburg meermaals verwoest en kwam de omgeving van het stadje onder invloed van de zee te staan. Toen de Staatsen in 1604 het naburige Aardenburg veroverden, begonnen de Spanjaarden meteen Middelburg te versterken. In plaats van stenen muren en houten poorten kwamen er kanonvuurbestendige aarden wallen en kleine bastions. Het kasteel werd verlaagd en versterkt. Later kwamen daar nog grote bastions op de hoekpunten van de vestingswal bij. Vandaag is de vorm van de gebastioneerde stad nog duidelijk herkenbaar. De positie van de twee bastions aan de grens is te herkennen aan de perceelvormen. Van het oostelijke bastion zijn zelfs de contouren nog goed te zien, dankzij een recente herprofilering.
