Van de vier watersalamandersoorten die we in Vlaanderen rijk zijn, spreekt de kamsalamander het meest tot de verbeelding. Onze grootste watersalamander is bovendien Europees beschermd. In Wellen komt de 'waterdraak' nog voor in vier zones. Een van die zones is de natuurgebied De Grote Beemd. Limburgs Landschap vzw liet de afgelopen jaren een netwerk van poelen aanleggen in de Grote Beemd. Hopelijk kunnen ze zich daardoor in de toekomst weer verspreiden over de Herkvallei. Een kleinschalig landschap met visvrije poelen of vijvers, hagen, houtkanten, rietkragen en knotbomenrijen vormen het ideale leefgebied voor deze soort.
