De toerismegeschiedenis van Killarney gaat minstens terug tot het midden van de 18e eeuw, toen Thomas, de vierde burggraaf van Kenmare (Lord Kenmare), begon bezoekers en nieuwe bewoners naar de stad te trekken. De datum van 1747 werd gebruikt in recente 250-jaar vieringen om de geschiedenis van het toerisme in Killarney te eren. Een bezoek van koningin Victoria in 1861 gaf de stad wat internationale bekendheid. Killarney profiteerde enorm van de komst van de spoorlijn in juli 1853. De Britse handelsgids uitgever Isaac Slater merkte op dat er in 1846 drie hotels in de stad waren[16], maar in 1854, een jaar na de komst van de spoorlijn, noemde James Fraser zeven hotels en beschreef hij hun locaties.
