Moervaart, en sydlig aflastning af Durme, blev i 1531 reguleret og forsynet med forskellige broer. Moervaart, Zuidlede (allerede reguleret i 1379) og andre vandløb i Moervaartdepressionen var vigtige blandt andet for transport af tørv og brænde til Gent. Udnyttelsen af mos- og tørvgrunde var en af de vigtigste økonomiske aktiviteter i Moerbeke i middelalderen.
